Agni Soma Dance Vinyaasa

A core dance workout muse..

2 min readJul 13, 2024

Fitness dancing has become quite a thing among women of my age these days. Turn on the video.. Tune in to your teacher.. Unwind and let go! I was rather late in this bandwagon, and while catching up with dance lingo like “Shimmy Shimmy”, happened to land in an amazing core-burning belly workout hosted at Pop Sugar.

And the erstwhile Yoga and Physics geek in me was all amazed. So much like Yoga in feminine motion.

What intense shimmering movements.. Like the fishtail undulations in the waters.. Like rustling of the leaves in the wind.. Like the flapping of the butterfly wings..

An Agni Soma vinyasa of sorts.. While the lower half burning in fast intensity, the slow wave-like movements of the arms and finger mudras, and eye dristi bringing poise and coolness of Soma..

The tapping footwork kicking in agility and inertia of motion.. The extended arms adding to balance, poise and range of motion.. And the gentle directional sway of fingers aiding rotation.. Body mechanics and anatomy at play!

Of crazy isolations, shimmerings, and undulations.. Part by part isolation of knees, hips, chest and adding layers with gentle arm movement. The crazy left-right chest isolations with arms extended, and the wave-like undulations are so much like in Odissi.. Geometric hip movements such as vertical and horizontal eights, spindle like axial churn in shimmy.

And in the chakra spectrum.. The steady footwork, the wide hip openers, and the engaged core.. The opening of heart with the dance of shoulders and arm.. The gentle swaying of the head and the joy in the crown taking it to completion.

In today’s time of shrinking worlds and youngsters breaking barriers, there is choice ranging from the poise of stationary asanas to semi classical dance workouts.. Whatever the mind and body can take and relish!

The universe celebrates divine proportions, music, periodicity and fluid architecture. And through music, dance, poetry, cooking giving this soul a surreal taste.. atma nar naari is about motion, joy and dance after all!
