AI/ML in the Hood of Mathematics

A passing thought..

I often wonder if Mathematics was a way of understanding the hidden secrets and mysteries of the Universe. And we humans have mastered the trade and have been deploying it on every front.

On the creative and analytical fronts, our mind is no less than a genius whizkid.. A bunch of comparators always in action and helping us navigate this world.. make judgments, and opinions, gather intelligent insights, and whatnot. Whether we like Math or not, we are wired this way..

I was reading a book on Ancient Math and came across this quote, and it seemed quite befitting in the context of AI.

For behind the Hood of AI are a bunch of Calculus, Matrix operations, Polynomials, and whatnot working in frenzy to train and gather insights.. Be it AI Art, ChatGPT, AI in medicine, Netflix recommendations, Self Driving cars, or Amazon shopping experience. All the 3 worlds have been captured by this Masterchef of Mathematics..

My father-in-law, a retired Math Headmaster would often quote.. Mathematics is the King of Subjects.. But the following quote is mind boggling..

Whatever there is in all the three worlds.. which are moving and non-moving beings.. all that indeed cannot exist as apart from Mathematics.

बहुभिर्विप्रलापै: किं त्रिलोक्ये सचराचरे ।
यत्किञ्चिद्वस्तु तत्सर्वं गणितेन विना न हि ॥ १६

In the worldly life.. in learning.. in religious practice.. in business.. in everything, Mathematics is useful. In romance.. economics… in music, dance and drama, in cooking, medicine and in architecture, in prosody, poetry, logic and grammar, and in all the arts, Mathematics reigns supreme.
It is used in calculating movements of the Sun and other heavenly bodies.

Ganitasarasangraha, by Jain monk mathematician Mahavira (815–877 CE)
