I was listening to a Grammar lecture series and wondered how much of the familiar words came from this Space.. In the Indian languages and in the language of Philosophy - Bhakti - Math - Poetry and Event Summarisation..

These are quite convenient when compared to their complex verb forms.

The Very Familiar Words

We may not be aware of the family type of these words.. Neverthless these are very familiar even in Indian languages

ध्यानम् (ध्यै) >> meditation
गा
नम् (गै) >> singing
नय
नम् >> eyes {that which takes you every where}
भव
नम् >> {that which you exist in}
भोज
नम् >> {that which you eat}
शय
नम् >> sleeping

The Signature look of the words

These words mostly act as Abstract Nouns.. Bhaava-vaachaka, and end with the signature ‘anam/aNam’. These are more beginner friendly than their verb forms.

Philosophy of Learning

‘Listen, Reflect and Assimilate’ is a Vedantic way of learning the higher truths.. It’s acquisition, inquiry and absorbtion..

श्रवणम् >> मननम् >> निदि-ध्यासनम्

The other terms in the learning parlance are

लेखनम् पठनम् ध्यानम्

The MadhurAstakam

There is sweetness in every act..

करणं मधुरं तरणं मधुरं हरणं मधुरं रमणं मधुरम् ।
वमितं मधुरं शमितं मधुरं मधुराधिपतेरखिलं मधुरम् ॥

The doing is sweet.. The crossing is sweet.. The stealing is sweet.. The pleasure is sweet.

In the Space of Math

When we think of math terminology पारिभाषिक-पदानि.. We expect the terms to be standard and not verb like.. And here we are..

कलनम् = calculation
सङ्कल
नम् = addition
व्यव-कल
नम् = subtraction
गुण
नम् = multiplication
भाज
नम् = division

दशांश-विधानम् = decimal-system
अप-वर्तनम् = reduction of fraction
समी-करणम् = balancing of equation
मध्यमाहरणम् = quadratic equation

Summary of रामायणम्

Notice the elegance of the words in this एक श्लोकी रामायण, which summarises Ramayanam in one verse.

आदौ राम तपोवनादि गमनं, हत्वा मृगं कांचनम्।
वैदेही
हरणं जटायुमरणं, सुग्रीवसंभाषणम्।।
वाली
निर्दलनं समुद्रतरणं, लंकापुरीदाहनम्
पश्चाद्रावण कुंभकर्ण
हननम्, ऐतद्धि रामायणम्।।

At the very beginning.. going to the forest.. abduction of Vaidehi.. death of Jatayu.. talk with Sugreeva.. death of Vali.. burning of Lanka.. death of Ravana.. This is the walk of Rama

Interestingly, अयनम् means ‘travel’ (from root meaning to go) .. रामायणम् is the journey and travel of Rama.. The word अध्ययनम् (अधि + root इ) meaning ‘to study’ , also stems from the same root..

Summarisation of श्री कृष्ण लीला in Bhagawatam

आदौ देवकी देव गर्भ जननं, गोपी गृहे वर्धनम्
मायापूतन जीवताप
हरणं गोवर्धनो धारणं ।।
कंस छेदन् कौरावादी
हननं कुंती सुतापालनम्
एतद् भागवत पुराण कथितम् श्री कृष्ण लीलामृतम् ।।

At the very beginning.. being born to Devaki.. growing in the households of Gopis.. killing Putana.. holding the mount Govardhana.. killing kamsa.. taking care of Arjuna.. These are the pass times of Krishna in the Bhagawat Purana.

Bhaja Govindam

As it is full of philosophy, we can expect to find some words here and there.

पुनरपि जननं पुनरपि मरणं पुनरपि जननीजठरे शयनम्
जननम् = {जन्} birth
मरणम् = {मॄ} death
शयनम् = {शी } sleep
Birth again, death again, again to sleep in the mother’s womb !

कुरुते गङ्गा-सागर-गमनं व्रत-परिपालनम् अथवा दानम्
गमनम् = {गम्} walk
पालनम् = {पाल} nourish
दानम् = {दा} charity
One may go to Gangasagar, observe fasts, and give away riches in charity !

प्राणायामं प्रत्याहारं.. जाप्य-समेत-समाधि+विधानं
कुरु
अवधानं महत् अवधानम्
अवधानम् = अव + {धा} hold
विधानम् = वि + {धा} procedure
Perform these with care, with extreme care.
