Elements in Human Expression

I was reading a Linkedin article on the science of public speaking.. ‘The most viral TED speakers use 465 hand gestures in 18 minutes. Our brain gives 12.5x weightage to handgestures than words.’ May be numbers are bit of an exaggeration, nevertheless point noted.

In the realm of AI and DeekSeek, it amazes me, our forefathers have thought of such models. modate iti mudra.. Mudra or Gestures are that which bring life and excitement. Nayati iti abhinaya.. Abhinaya or acting is that which transports us into a different realm.

I am reminded of the myriad K dramas and conversations.. Notable movies and opulent lectures. What set them aside.

Upasana Tendulkar ji annotates the Linkedin post further.. Natyashastra models the verbal and non-verbal communication beautifully into 4 elements. The body language aangikam.. The external garb aaharyam . The voice modulation and intonations the vachaka factor.. The flowing content the saatvika factor.

In my Highschool.. Mrs Saraswati our Biology teacher was a game changer.. I was suddenly in awe with the Biology lessons.. The complex anatomy diagrams.. Her breakup of greek names..myo-cardio-infarcation.. superior-venacava echo even today.. Her tone, gestures and body language enacted the lessons..

Decades later, when I expressed my awe for her teaching.. she revealed that she was a Bharatanatyam dancer once upon a time.. perhaps unknowingly.. the acting elements slipped into her lessons.. ‘Wow! Good for us’ I thought..

A joyful human expression is such an improtant vehicle in human communication and learning.. For it breaks barriers into the little creatures that we are..

I get reminded of the opening prayer in Bharatanatyam..

Angikam bhuvanam yasya
Vachikam sarva vangmayam
Aharyam chandra taradi Tam
namah satvikam sivam

We bow to Him the benevolent One
Whose limbs are the universe,
Whose song and poetry are the essence of all languages, Whose ornaments are the moon and the stars…

My ode to my teachers.. For the little creature I am.. they have showered light on so many topics and help me learn and express better.

Today I’m reminded of Saraswati Gauri Uma Devis.. Dhanyosmi Aham..
