Vivid illustrations of Vivekam and Vairagyam..

Sanskrit verses and anvaya at the end of the post.

On pride and ego

“When my knowledge was limited, I was blinded in pride like an elephant in frenzy.”

“When I was in the company of the humble erudite, that conceit of mine, disappeared like fever.”

~

Fine words

“It is not ornamentation, gear or exotic perfumes.. It is refined speech that embellishes a man.”

“For the ornament of senses slide away with time, the ornament of good words is a gift for ever.”

~

Fine deeds

“ The ears are lightened by listening great works, and not by mere earrings.. Their hands are embellished by the act of giving, and not by dangling bracelets.”

“Their body shines by the light of benevolence, and not by smearing sandalwood paste..

~

Mutable vs Immutable

“Pleasures of the senses will abandon you unannounced. But if you cognize, and choose to leave them, it will lead to higher pleasure of bliss!”

~

Wisdom on Desire

“The turbulent rivers of desire, the waters of wish, and the waves of thirst.. The alligators of love, the scattering birds of logic, and the hovering bees of attraction.. All waiting to uproot the tree of the Steady Self.”

“Thoughts and Reflection are the Steady Shores of this River.. The Wise one crosses and shelters there.”

~

Desire for No Desire

“Having dug the earth in search of hidden treasures, having smelted rocks for metals.. Having crossed the oceans, having served to please kings, spent nights in burial grounds concentrating on mantras and worship, and yet I did not get even a broken shell.”

“O Desire! At least now spare me!”

~

Landscape of Change and Time

“That beautiful city.. That mighty monarch.. Those powerful nobles.. Those learned assemblies.”

“Those beautiful women.. Those wayward princes.. Those bards singing their praises.”

“Ah!! Time has swept away this grandeur, as mere objects of memory.. My ode to Time!!”

~

Futility

“Alas! He who is not fortunate to reflect in the orb of his mind, is born in this land of action.. Cooking mere sesame seeds, in a gem studded vessel, burning and wasting away the sandal woods. How unfortunate!”

~

Passage of Time

“Old age pounding like a tigress, ailments striking like an enemy, life leaking out like waters from a broken pot; and yet people continue their old ways!”

~

“This earth the vast bed, the sky the canopy, this gentle breeze the fan, the autumnal moon the lamp, and rejoicing in the company of nothingness as friend..

The wise one lies down happily and peacefully, like a monarch of undiminished glory.”

~

Elements..Union with the Truth..

“O Earth, my mother! O Wind, my father! O Fire, my friend! O Water, my good relative! O sky, my brother!”

“By means of an amplitude of pure knowledge resplendent with merits developed through my association with you all, I now merge in Supreme Brahman.”

~

Character is the biggest embellishment! शीलं परमं भूषणम्

“Good nature is the ornament of Master; Silence of Valor; Tranquility of Wise; Humility of scholars; Spending for the right cause of Wealth ; Freedom from anger of the Enduring; Forgiveness of Power;”

“Indeed.. Character is the biggest embellishment!”
